Как я уже отметил в начале — In the End на концертах группы присутствовала всегда.

Linkin Park играли ее в разных версиях на протяжении семнадцати лет. В ходе тура в поддержку One More Light, последнего альбома банды, музыканты максимально вовлекали в исполнение песни толпу.

Позже, уже после смерти Честера Беннингтона, эту идею развил Майк Шинода, на своих сольных концертах он играл песню на пианино, оставляя пение припева фанатам.

И, разумеется, на песню сделано миллион отличных каверов и ремиксов в самых разных стилях — сейчас мы вспомним десяток моих любимых. А начать стоит с официальных «переделок» песни, их две и обе хороши. Первая — Enth E Nd. Это ремикс на In the End от самих Linkin Park с уже классического альбома ремиксов Reanimation, вышедшего в 2002 году.

Вторая версия In the End — это мэшап с треком Izzo от JAY-Z. Вышла песня на совместном альбоме мэшапов JAY-Z и Linkin Park — Collision Course. в 2004 году. Она, конечно, не так известна, как Numb/Encore, но все же звучит отлично, хоть и теряет свой двойственный смысл.

А вот In the End, исполненная в двадцати разных стилях — от Korn до Backstreet Boys. Канал Ten Seconds Songs вы наверняка знаете, а если нет — обязательно зацените. Там таких каверов полно, залипать можно долго.

Origin

On November 1st, 2009, YouTuber Ray Koefoed uploaded «In The Virtual End,» an animated remake of the music video for «In the End» by Linkin Park featuring Half-Life characters. The video featured the character Eli Vance as vocalist Mike Shinoda and the character Dr. Kleiner as vocalist Chester Bennington and was created with Garry’s Mod and SDK Face Poser. The video accumulated over 100,000 views as of August 2021 and over 870,000 views as of early August 2022 (following its meme popularity).

After March and April 2022, the Anime Memes Replaced with Breaking Bad meme format gained virality in the subreddit /r/okbuddychicanery. On May 11th, 2022, Redditor mikegent01 posted two Anime Memes Replaced memes in the /r/OKbuddyHalfLife subreddit, replacing punchlines in two anime memes with the «In The Virtual End» (second post shown below). The posts gained over 600 upvotes and 1,000 upvotes, respectively, in three months.

Не менее известен и клип на In the End, срежиссированный Нэйтаном Коксом и ди-джеем Linkin Park Джо Ханом.

Группа снимала видео в 2001 году, в перерыве тура Ozzfest 2001. У клипа на сегодня уже почти миллиард просмотров — больше только у видео на Numb. А в 2002 году ролик выиграл награду Best RockVideo на MTV Video Music Awards.

Забавно, что лейбл хотел, чтобы группа сделала обычное перформанс-видео, но Кокс, хоть и с трудом, протолкнул его с Ханом идею. В итоге мы получили куда более концептуальный ролик. Съемки проходили в павильоне в Калифорнии и значительная часть декораций в видео — настоящая. Проектировать их помогал Патрик Тотополус, известный работой над фильмами «Я, робот», «Хроники Риддика», «Сайлент Хилл» и многими другими. Ну а в плане визуального дизайна группа вдохновлялась аниме Хаяо Миядзаки «Принцесса Мононоке» и картинами чешского художника Альфонса Мухи, одного из самых ярких представителей стиля ар нуво.

Для своего времени ролик был очень крутым — сейчас, конечно, устаревшие CG-эффекты бросаются в глаза, но видео все равно смотрится легко и почти без кринжа. Но самым запоминающимся (и все еще работающим) моментом был плывущий по небу кит — этот эпизод придумал Джо Хан и он даже объяснял его смысл:

The Making of the Video[]

On Linkin Park’s Frat Party at the Pankake Festival DVD one of the special features is ‘The Making of In the End’. It begins with footage of a bat hanging off the windscreen wipers of the band’s tour bus, with band members, specifically Joe Hahn making reference to the bats from the In the End video.

Brad describes his custom headphones as his jack into the Matrix and why he needs to wear them on stage.

In this ‘Making of’, the footage shown is of Chester miming to a sped-up version of the track, and effect used so that when the film is slowed down, the track sounds normal as does the singer, but with an added dramatic effect.

Also shown is Mike Shinoda jokingly claiming that Angelina Jolie was doing his make-up, but «her agent would kill us if we showed her», and footage of «Crawling» being performed by Bryson Jones and the ‘Sweethearts of the Rodeo All-Star Band’, full audio of which is also available on the DVD.

In the following weeks, the video was used in more Anime Memes Replaced memes in the subreddit. For example, on May 12th, 2022, Redditor Black-dragon4129 posted a Couple Texting in Bed meme that gained over 1,400 upvotes in three months (shown below). On May 14th, Redditor GoldKghtRT posted a Kid Named X meme that received over 1,100 upvotes in the same period.

In late May 2022, the format achieved major popularity in the subreddit, with meta jokes appearing and users link commenting the lyrics of the song under posts (example posts shown below). On May 22nd, Redditorncm_dmn_ch posted an «In The Virtual End» meme to /r/half-life, where it gained over 1,200 upvotes in roughly three months, becoming the first such meme to be posted out of the original subreddit. On May 23rd, Redditor Black-dragon3129 created a petition to set a still image of Dr. Kleiner from the video as /r/OKbuddyHalfLife’s subreddit logo, with the post gaining over 2,000 upvotes in three months.

On May 28th, Gamebanana user DoDodatn submitted a mod that replaces the credits music in Half-Life 2 with «In the End.»

In late May 2022, the format saw further spread within the Half-Life fandom as it gained popularity in the Half-Life Mesaposting group.

Starting in early July 2022, the format started gaining virality outside of /r/OKbuddyHalfLife and Half-Life Mesaposting with Anime Memes Replaced and bait-and-switch memes. For example, on July 1st, 2022, YouTube user Engineer in Home Depot posted a bait-and-switch that gained over 17,900 views in one month (shown below, left). On July 25th, YouTube user SkipFighter posted a demonstration video replacing Eli Vance and Dr. Kleiner’s dialogue with the song, with the video garnering over 380,000 views in two weeks (shown below, right).

On July 19th, Tenor user Scalfiire uploaded a collection of 38 GIF captions pairing clips from the video with the song’s lyrics.

In late July 2022, the format achieved popularity on TikTok (examples shown below).

Полная аранжировка совмещает в себе приёмы арпеджио и щипок. Также они используются и в другой популярной песне Faded на гитаре. Вступление основано на пауэр-аккордах, аппликатура соответствующая (например, первый зажимается указательным (2 на 4-ой, а мелодию 4 на 3-ей играем без-ым). Правая рука при этом исполняет щипок, затем мелодический отрывок – аналогично Linkin Park In the End табы простого варианта.

В 9 такте начинается перебор. E5 ставим указательным и средним. Это нужно, чтобы добавить ноту E♭ в 13, 21 тактах (безым. или мизинцем). Дальше идут два акк. на басовых струнах – 3 лад средним, 2 л. – ук-ым, а 4 л. – миз. в 20 такте 4-5 ставим без. и миз., чтобы удобнее было зажать 3 лад на второй стр-не.

С 25 такта удобнее мыслить аккордами. Сначала идёт Emadd9 (при этом просто зажимаем 2 лад на 1-ой и 3 лад на 2-ой, главное смотрите, какие струны исполняет правая рука), затем обыгрываем обычный G. В 27 такте идёт D с пул-оффами – указательным пальцем срываем 2 лад на открытую струну и делаем хаммер вновь на 2 лад (всё это за один удар правой руки по 1-ой струне). Потом средним зажимаем 3 лад и вновь срываем на уже зажатый 2. Далее всё идёт по тем же аккордам, главное соблюдайте ритм и следите какие струны нужно играть правой рукой.

Для начала рассмотрим табулатура вступления, по которому можно сразу узнать этот трек. Сразу стоит сказать, что, хотя мелодия и лёгкая, но аккорды здесь не самые простые. Вступление строится по принципу гармония + мелодический отрывок. Для игры этого варианта потребуется хорошая растяжка пальцев, поэтому для совсем начинающих будет сложно.

Сначала мы берём аккорд, похожий по аппликатуре на E♭, но отличающийся парой нот. Как ни странно, но в данной вариации удобнее будет взять полное барре на 3 ладу. Зажимаем его указательным пальцем (шестую струну можно не трогать – в аккорде она не участвует, а зажать будет чуть легче). Можно взять и неполное (на 3-4 струны), однако тогда придётся тянуться мизинцем к басу 6 на пятой струне. В варианте с полным зажатием, растягивать палец придётся несколько меньше.

Итак, вы взяли барре, теперь ставим безымянный на 4 лад второй струны. Подразумевается, что далее мы должны будем сыграть 4 лад на 4-ой струне средним пальцем. Поэтому либо сразу положите его, либо приготовьтесь.

Мы уделили много внимания постановке только одного аккорда, однако это значительно упростит исполнение In the End на гитаре и поможет в дальнейшем при игре подобных трудных моментов.

Правая рука в это время исполняет щипок на гитаре. В данной гармонии играется 5, 3 и 2 струны – большим, средним, без-ым соответственно. Указательным сыграем 4 лад на 4 струне.

Обратите внимание на 3 такт. Зажимаем 5 стр-на на 2 ладу ср-ним, а 4 стр

на 1 л. – ук-ным. Этот аккорд должен звучать весь такт. Поэтому дёргаем его (не забываем про открытую 2), а затем без-ым тянемся к 3 стр. 3 лад, мизинцем к 4 стр. 4 л. Постановка руки при этом получается такая же, как при взятии первого аккорда.

Гармония во 2 и 4 тактах берётся проще – зажмём 2 на 2 струне ук-ным, 3 на 4 стр. сред., а бас до# на 5 – безым. Миз-ем добавим 4 на 4 ст-не.

Music video[]

The music video takes place in a fantasy setting and uses massive CGI animation. The band performs atop a giant statue, which has a ‘winged soldier’ on top of it, which is similar looking to the ‘winged soldier’ on the cover artwork of Linkin Park’s Hybrid Theory album. The tower itself is in the shape of a woman and appears to be the left-out portion of the cover of Hybrid Theory EP.

The portions where Mike Shinoda raps first take place in a wasteland with thorny vines sprouting out of the ground, surrounding him and shattering into dust (first verse) and then grass and plants sprouting up around him (second verse). During the time Mike raps his verses, Chester stands atop a platform with gargoyles on the edges. This platform is in front of a door in the shape of a trapezium. Near the end of the video, the skies turn dark and it begins to rain, and the band performs in the downpour until the end of the song, where the rain stops and the camera pans away from the tower, showing the wasteland where Shinoda had rapped in is now a lush Greenland. During the rain, the statues on the tower begin to move.

The rest of the band (Delson, Farrell, Hahn & Bourdon) appear only during Chester’s chorus and during the outro when the camera focus is near to the tower.

Some fansites of Linkin Park have claimed that Dave Farrell injured his foot during the making of the video when he jumped off one of the platforms, but still continued filming until the end. This fact has never been officially confirmed by the band or their record label.

A strange-looking whale can be seen flying around the large statue during most of the video, specifically at the end of the video. The whale in the video was Joe Hahn’s idea. He has been quoted as saying «It’s not like I pulled it out of my ass; it made sense to me.» about it. The reasoning behind its inclusion is still unknown. Many fans of the Legend of Zelda video games have noted similarities between the whale in the video and the ‘Wind Fish’ character from The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. However, there is no evidence to support the design of Linkin Park’s whale was a tribute to the game, and appears to be coincidental.

Although there is a keyboard loop in this song, the video does not show Mike, who is a pianist in the group, or anyone else playing a keyboard in any scene of the video. However, Joe Hahn is shown using a MIDI pad to emulate the piano loop at the end.
